Last week I found myself in a somewhat heated conversation with friends, “Is Holy Grounds or Café 62 better?” I didn’t realize how controversial this question was. In my mind, I just thought that most people had different opinions on the matter, and that was that. But it turns out it means more than just a preference…it says something about their personality.
Clare Braswell, a freshman at Benedictine said, “the coffee shops are two different aesthetics, so I believe it says something about the environment they like to be in and personality they have.”
Each coffee shop has its unique characteristics and niches that attract different Benedictine students to it. Here are the pros and cons of Holy Grounds and Cafe 62 which play a part in which coffee shop students prefer.
Pros of Holy Grounds:
- Central location on campus
- More seating than Café 62
- Cozy and fun atmosphere
- Good background music
- Great social hangout
- Free water and cups
- Open all day
- Open on weekends
Cons of Holy Grounds
- Pricier than Café 62
- Extra $0.70 per added flavor
- Often have to wait in line to order
- Very social but most likely won’t be able to get work done with all the distractions
- Often very crowded
- Sometimes takes a while for orders to come out
Pros of Café 62
- Cheaper than Holy Grounds
- Quieter working environment which is great for getting work done
- No extra cost for added flavor
- In Academic building close to classes
- Often no line
- Super quick service with barely any wait time for order
- Menu is available online
Cons of Café 62
- Not a ton of seating

- Not super social
- Have to pay for a cup of water
- Not open on weekends
- Open limited hours
Both Holy Grounds and Café 62 have their pros and cons. Ultimately a student’s preference of which coffee shop they like better can depend on the type of environment they like to be in, when and where they want to get coffee, and their budget. Holy Grounds may be for the social person who is there for the aesthetic and environment whereas Café 62 may be the perfect place for a quick on the go drink or the quiet environment to get last minute work done.
No matter what, both coffee shops are great places on campus that add to the Benedictine college experience.
