The Theatre Department’s spring production Electra makes its way to the Benedictine stage this weekend.
Dr. Nathan Bowman is the director of the production. “I wrote all the music for it, I am the scenic and sound designer, and it’s also my own translation of the work as well,” Bowman said.
Benedictine audiences should expect Electra to be a little different than previous productions like The Importance of Being Earnest last fall and Godspell. “I think it’s the kind of show that’s supposed to make people uncomfortable and it’s supposed to make people think about what’s happening on the stage,” Bowman said.
Benedictine senior Delaney Williams, a Theatre Arts major, is cast as the titular character Electra. Williams promises intense emotions. She said, “Electra is really intense. We talked a lot in the development process about Electra being kind of like a horror.” She added, “It definitely does have that added level of like, you know, there’s blood, there’s violence, there’s language.”
Electra touches on unique and profound human themes. “There’s a lot of talk about justice, vengeance, and grief,” Williams said. She appreciated the role that religion plays in grief in Electra, saying “I think that’s really interesting and really important.”
Electra opens its curtains Thursday Feb.19th throughout Sunday Feb. 22nd. Students can get tickets in advance by going to https://www.benedictine.edu/academics/departments/theatre-dance. Show posters and QR codes are all around campus and you can also buy tickets at the box office.
