Atchison has many hidden gems and places that provide activities for college students.
These places may be off the beaten path but provide fun opportunities for entertainment or (something else) during college downtime.
One such place is the Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum, located about nine minutes west of Benedictine College.
Amelia Earhart is important to Atchison, as it is her birthplace. In addition to the museum, every summer they host a festival dedicated to her.
The museum consists of multiple exhibits, the largest being a replica of the plane Amelia would have used in her flight.
The museum provides a guided experience in the form of marked paths, and interactive exhibits.
The first main section goes over miscellaneous scientific and aeronautical facts, designed to give an theoretical background and understanding of how planes of this era worked.
It also features historical exhibits, including a functioning propellor, an engine, as well as a wall displaying the history of flight from ancient times to the modern ages.
It is done in a format catered towards both adults and children, allowing everyone to have an educational experience.
The upstairs section features exhibits on navigation technology of the time, and provides interactive exhibits for visitors to try.
Guides are available throughout and are happy to answer any questions regarding the exhibits, or Amelia Earhart’s life.
In addition, they provide a virtual reality experience that simulates a plane flight, with you controlling it.
This place is a great place to go if you have family visiting, or if you just want to experience something different in Atchison.
