I was taking a walk across campus on a random Thursday evening last week, and as I walked by the Benedictine College soccer field, Legacy Field, a group of people were gathered around the fields as two soccer games were being played. What I was witnessing from a distance was “BUSA” which stands for “Benedictine Underground Soccer Association.” BUSA is a student-run soccer league that takes place after the official intramural season. Teams are drafted and the games take place on weekday and weekend evenings, where teams face each other in competitive soccer games.
What captivated me the most was the lively community that assembles for each BUSA game. You can find students in the stands watching the games, students down by the field cheering for their friends, and players giving it their all on the field. Music is blaring, people are laughing, and memories are being made. It is a life-giving environment filled with joy and fun.
Michael Zimmer, a freshman, has gotten involved in BUSA at Benedictine College and played both in the fall and is currently on a team. He expressed how he loves playing BUSA because, “I get to play soccer with my friends all the time, and I get to score a lot of goals.” He continued saying, “It’s really fun just playing soccer with the soccer community at Benedictine because there is a lot of really good players here and a lot of people who can play at a really high level.”
BUSA is one way that Benedictine College cultivates community amongst students. It is a fun environment as students gather to play soccer. Friendships are formed along the way and community is strengthened. The season will come to a close soon as the semester wraps up, but not before one team is crowned champions. Whether you play soccer or not, BUSA games are a fun way to spend the evening surrounded by fellowship and high energy.
