On Jan. 26, former Kansas City Royals Hall of Famer and five-time Major League Baseball All-star Mike Sweeney spoke at Benedictine College in front of 300 students and visitors.
His talk discussed themes such as accountability, building up strong and virtuous relationships and striving to live a virtuous life.
Following the talk, some students were interviewed about what they thought about his content and on-stage personality, which students responded positively to.
Donovan Harris, a senior at Benedictine College, in giving his overall impressions said “I thought the talk was very interesting and different from a lot of other speakers who I have seen come to the campus. He seemed a lot more passionate about the topics and how he thought it could affect us. I also enjoyed how he brought the other two people as examples of his previous mentor and someone who he mentored.”
Donovan Harris, when asked for a key takeaway, responded: “I think that the key takeaway was that we are all brothers and sisters in Christ, and this means that we are responsible for holding each other accountable. Life is way too hard to attempt to make changes alone, but with the guidance of the Holy Spirit and support from the people around us, we can become greater than ourselves.”
Overall, Mike Sweeney’s talk and what he discussed seemed to resonate with the large Catholic population on campus. Joel Bichelmeyer, a junior at Benedictine College, noted that he “believes this topic is crucial for college students because it cuts right to the core of our beliefs. If we want a better relationship with Jesus, we need to be vulnerable with him.”
