Intramural sports are a popular way to stay active in college.
In college, not everyone is a student-athlete, although plenty of student-athletes pick up an intramural sport for some extra fun. Many, however, simply enjoy living an active lifestyle.
Intramural sports are a way for students to maintain an active lifestyle without the commitment of being a student athlete.
There are various intramural sports offered at Benedictine College throughout the course of the school year such as pickleball, volleyball, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, basketball, and rugby.

Sebastian Lyons, a junior, is a player for this year’s intramural basketball.
“It’s something I look forward to every year. You still get that competitive athletic spirit that a lot of people left behind in high school,” Lyons said.
Students form teams and are sorted into leagues based on their level of competition and play different groups on campus here at Benedictine.
League A is more for students who would like to be more competitive, while League B is geared for students who are in it more so for fun, with a lighter competitive pressure.
Theresa Temprendola, a senior at Benedictine, has not only played several intramural sports throughout her time at BC, but is also a student-athlete in the Raven Regiment.
She has played intramural volleyball, basketball, soccer, ultimate frisbee, and flag football.
“It’s such a fun environment where you get to play with your friends, very low stakes, but competitive if you want it to be.”
Her experiences in intramurals have been a fun outlet for her to turn to for enjoyment while juggling academics, the commitments of being a student-athlete, and life.
During the school year, the different intramurals will have their season, which allows the flexibility of being able to do multiple sports, as there is not the fear of overlap.
Participation in intramural sports truly provides students with many opportunities to not only find an outlet to enjoy their college experience through the friendships made on the team but also benefits them in maintaining an active lifestyle as they get in exercise through the sport itself.
