At the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, the United States men’s hockey team captured a dramatic 2–1 gold medal victory over Canada, ending a 46-year Olympic gold drought dating back to the iconic “Miracle on Ice” team of 1980. New Jersey Devils Jack Hughes scored the winning goal securing the medal. But without their goalkeeper Conner Hellebuyck and the record breaking 41 saves he had, there would have been no gold medal.
President Donald Trump announced “I’ve never seen a goalie play as well as Connor Hellebuyck.” Hellebuyck will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, for his role in the triumph. The team was honored on Capitol Hill with a standing
ovation.
Following the overtime goal photographers, and reporters captured some very patriotic moments to really show the significance of this win for the players and for the United States. “This is all about our country right now … I’m so proud to be American today,” Hughes said
after clinching the gold.
The victory resonated far beyond the rink. The game became one of the most-watched sporting events in U.S. history, averaging 26 million viewers across broadcast and streaming platforms, a record for such an early start time. This win brings us together, even if it’s only for a
moment, we come together and that is what is important
