The Benedictine Ravens softball team is in position to build on last year’s success and make a run in the conference tournament.
The Ravens posted a 34-22 record last year, that win total marked a program record for the Ravens.
That success came in the team’s fourth season under Head Coach Paul Hunt. The Ravens have finished over .500 in every season under Coach Hunt.
That success in the regular season led the team to the 5th seed in the 2021 Heart Conference Tournament, but the Ravens year ended in disappointment as they went 0-2 on the first day of the tournament and were eliminated from contention.
Coach Hunt and the players look to bounce back and make a deep run in 2022.
“We have a great mix of returners and newcomers that will give us the most depth we have had in the past five years,” Coach Hunt said.
They will be led by two returning First Team All-Heart Conference performers in Madison Zaccardo, a senior catcher, and Megan Medhus, a senior utility player.
Zaccardo was a power bat in the middle of the lineup for the Ravens last year. She led them in home runs with 13. She finished the year with a .361 batting average and 10 doubles.
Medhus as part of her .430 batting average broke the record for doubles in a season with 27, as well as leading the way on the base paths with 10 stolen bases.
Medhus’s speed and Zaccardo’s power are sure to play major roles in the Ravens 2022 season and their quest for a conference championship, both on the field and with their leadership and experience off the field.
Along with the two seniors, Hunt is excited about the addition of transfer Ally Pickering.
“She is coming off an All-American season last season,” Hunt said.
The season opens at home as they will welcome the Doane Tigers to the Asher Sports Complex for a double-header. The Ravens were victorious in both contests.
Up next, the Ravens will host the Briar Cliff Chargers on Saturday.
