The Benedictine College community has come together in an amazing display of faith and support Alex Lynch, a junior finance major from Iowa who has been courageously battling cancer for nearly five years.
Lynch has been a pillar of the campus community. In addition to his academic pursuits, he serves as a resident assistant and is actively involved in the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS).
As his chemotherapy treatments intensify, the Benedictine community has responded with powerful gestures of love and support, including prayer campaigns as well as students shaving their heads in solidarity.
Benedictine Junior Henry Kemme said “Over a hundred of us committed to praying 30 Memorares a day for Alex, and in just two weeks, we hit 100,000. It was amazing to see how quickly the campus came together. We even sent out mass texts asking people to join the prayer chain. The response was overwhelming.”
Students created a GroupMe to organize rosary prayers for Alex, and earlier this month, “between 20 to 30 male students shaved their heads in solidarity as Alex began to lose his own hair due to treatment,” Kemme said
“It wasn’t just about shaving our heads; it was about standing next to our brother and showing him he’s not alone. That’s what being part of this community means.” Kemme said
The outpouring of support is a testament to the strength of Benedictine’s faith-based values and the close bonds that define student life on campus. When you see a friend going through something this hard, you realize how important it is to show up, with prayer, with time, with real brotherhood.
“Alex has always shown strength, and now we’re showing him he has an army behind him” Kemme added.
As Alex continues his fight, the Benedictine community remains committed to surrounding him with prayer, love, and unwavering support.
