Original, authentic art has become more important than ever in the era of AI and endless remakes.
However, Benedictine students are committed to keeping art alive through Loomings, the college literary magazine.
Since 1968, Loomings has published short-form poetry and stories submitted by students, as well as visual art and photography.
Cheyanne Walt, student editor of the magazine, emphasized the importance of showcasing the beauty of student’s work.
“It’s my second year as the general editor for the magazine, and it has been an incredible experience to work with both teams of editors to share the creative works of our campus community,” Walt said. “It amazes me the vast range of submissions that we receive, and it is beautiful to have the opportunity to experience and share these incredible works of art.”
Walt and the other editors worked hard to assemble a magazine that highlights the original stories and artwork of students.
“As a team, the editors have spent months working hard to compile the chosen submissions into the magazine we will share with you this week, and we could not be more thrilled to honor each artists’ work by inviting you into their stories.”
Each year, Loomings follows a new theme. Walt explained that this year, the theme of “Unveiling Beauty” would shed light on the importance of the creative process itself, something vital in today’s creative climate.
“When determining the theme for this year, ‘Unveiling Beauty,’ the editors wanted to put a focus on the beauty of the mundane and the beauty of the process of the work itself,” Walt said. “This theme encourages both the artists and the viewers of the magazine to slow down, take in, and appreciate the moments that we can miss during our everyday fast-paced life.”
Loomings is available to all Benedictine students. Pick up a copy at the temporary library next to the dining hall, or view present and past editions of the magazine online.
