The Benedictine Women’s basketball team achieved a victory this past week, March 3rd, in the Heart of America conference championship, MidAmerica Nazarene.
It was a hard-fought victory, with the result being 65-51. Senior player Josie Weishaar said, “Our mindset was to stay focused, follow the scout, trust in Coaches and teammates, and get the job done knowing we are fully capable!”
The team had a lot of great plays throughout the game that changed the outcome in the end. The Ravens devised several plays to keep the momentum on their side.
Weishaar also said, “There were specific plays that influenced the game such as our one-on-one attacking from the elbow. They simply could not stop it. On top of that, our rebounding was a HUGE focus going into the game, we knew that we needed to prevent them from getting second chance opportunities.”
This has been a special team with a spectacular record. Another Ravens senior Lauryn Dubbert said, “This year’s team has been a blessing to be a part of. Being around a group of girls that loves each other and cares for each other makes coming to practice every day easy. We play with a lot of heart and that shows on the court. We’re so excited about the opportunity to continue playing and hopefully make a run at nationals!”
Making it this far is already such an accomplishment, and the amount of work that has gone into getting this far is something to admire. Dubbert said, “A big role in the success of our team this year has been consistency and hard work. We’ve been lifting weights, conditioning, and practicing for almost 7 months now and we’re still dedicated.”
Even with all the hard work there can be tough challenges presented throughout the season Dubbert added, “We knew there were going to be highs and lows, but we didn’t let those affect our ultimate goal. Another big component of our success has been our upperclassmen experience and leadership. We have 6 seniors on our team who have played a lot of basketball and know what it takes to win.”
Finally, the Ravens will continue to compete in the playoffs and hopefully get a shot at nationals. Weishaar concluded, “when it comes to the playoffs we know that we just simply need to keep playing with the level of competitiveness and heart that we have shown this whole season.”
