Music as a part of the liturgy and a means toward encountering Christ gives the Benedictine College Music Team their mission.
The music team is run by campus ministry student workers. Their role is to plan the music for all the Masses except for the Masses celebrated by the Benedictine monks and other BC ministry related events.
Jazlyn Fenner is a student worker for campus ministry and is the music director for the 8 a.m. Latin Mass.
“For the Latin Mass, that involves quite a bit more music than the regular Mass because we sing basically the whole Mass. We have all the Gregorian chant propers which are not simplified melodies like most of the antiphons we have at other Masses,” she said.
Teresa Braun is also a student worker for the music team. She is in charge of the music for the Tuesday 5:30 student Mass.
“I get really excited to pick the music for each week just because I love all the music. For my Mass, I’ve been focused on doing more of a contemporary style versus the traditional, although I like to mix traditional and contemporary songs in my Masses so it’s still a mix of both and can appeal to people who like both,” she said.
A difference between music for Masses and other spiritual events is that music for the Masses must be sacred.
Fenner said, “Music in Mass takes the words that the church has given us to be said at that Mass and adds melody to it and helps words penetrate to the soul.’’
