The Benedictine women’s lacrosse team is doing a documentary on the season this year in an attempt to cover memorable moments throughout the season.
The women’s team has been very successful in these last couple years with trips to nationals and even an NAIA championship win in 2022.
The team has never done something like this, and Coach Clare Hanson decided it was time. She said, “Even when I played at Benedictine, I have always thought there should be a documentary crew on our team. I love the stories that documentaries tell, and I feel ours should be told.”
Making something like this takes a lot of time, and during the season the team is already busy, so balancing this and the team is a big responsibility. Hanson said, “Many hands make light work. Our managers have done an amazing job of capturing some special moments. They really have an eye for getting great shots, and do a great job of being incognito. The players barely know they are there most of the time.”
This documentary will be also huge for recruiting, as it can be shown to high school recruits to give them an idea of the culture and certain things that come with being on this team.
Hanson said, “It is such a great way to show recruits who we are and for the players to have something other than pictures to look back on. I also really want our alumni to feel like they know our current team, so this gives them a glimpse of who we are in the present.”
Hanson says it hasn’t been hard to come up with content for the series because there are so many different things to cover. Hanson added, “We just want to show who we are and what we do. All we have to think about is who we want to highlight for each episode, so there is a little storyboarding for that. There are honestly endless stories to tell so we won’t run out of ideas.”
The documentary is a rare thing at Benedictine. Not many teams, if any, have done something like this to show a whole season with so many different special moments.
Hanson added, “I love Hard Knocks and other similar documentaries where you get to see the work in the sport but also people’s lives. That is what the viewer is interested in. Are these people relatable? What great qualities do they have? Do I want to root for them? I hope you are more of a fan of BC Women’s Lax after watching our documentary.”
