The Kansas City Chiefs are playing a historic game Feb. 9, trying to be the first team to win three Super Bowls in a row.
The Chiefs have done a lot more than just win a lot of games these last couple years. They have created a dynasty, as well as a community extending all over the country. Here at Benedictine College, the Chiefs are more than just popular, as Atchison is so close to the city. There are so many students and teachers who show pride for their team with flags and jerseys.
Dr. Page, a professor in the Journalism and Mass Communications department, has been a big Chiefs fan since he was a young boy, growing up very close to Atchison. Dr. Page said, “If the Chiefs win this weekend, Kansas City will be euphoric. The Chiefs won the Super Bowl in 1970 for the first time. It took 50 years before the next and in between there were some years where they were good but not like it is now. It’s super cool to see this dynasty they’ve made over these last couple years.”
He also noted, “There is a huge benefit economically if they win, with the amount of traffic it will bring to the city. It will also cement their legacy as a dynasty, none of the professional sports teams in Kansas City have won like this and been respected in a long time.”
The Chiefs have also given people the chance to be a part of something bigger than themselves. The Super Bowl is the biggest game of the year in the U.S. out of all the professional sports, and the Chiefs have dominated the NFL over these last couple years. This gives people something to be proud of in their city.
Benedictine Student Harry Milligan is a freshman and lifelong Chiefs fan who grew up less than 30 minutes from the city. Milligan said, “I feel so excited about this game and the possibility of a three-peat. I have been a fan since I was a kid and got the chance to attend this year’s AFC championship. That game was the most memorable sporting event of my life. After seeing how crazy it was after that game, I can only imagine what it will be like if it goes our way again this weekend.”
No matter what happens in the Super Bowl, the Chiefs will still be known as a team that has made it to the Super Bowl four times out of the last five years. That is an accomplishment no team has ever achieved.
