Abortion is on the ballot in 11 states for the November 5th general election.In one state, Missouri, Amendment 3 is being proposed to “amend the Missouri Constitution to provide the right for reproductive freedom, which is defined as “the right to make and carry out decisions about all matters relating to reproductive health care, including but not limited to prenatal care, childbirth, postpartum care, birth control, abortion care, miscarriage care, and respectful birthing conditions.”
The current law states that patients must go under a 72 hour waiting period, receive counseling, and if the patient is a minor, they must have parental consent.
With abortion being a deciding issue for women voters in the United States, the following questions about abortion were asked to Atchison locals. What is your opinion on Amendment 3, and do you think that abortion should be decided by the states?
Cody Sinclair from Atchison, KS said, “I believe that the state should not dictate things that should be only a matter between patient and doctor. The state and federal government are overstepping medical freedom by attempting any legislation that would deny a person medical care that a doctor would recommend.”
Luke Giles said, “I think the only reason an abortion should be allowed is if it’s a life or death situation and I don’t think it should be the state’s choice. I think a task force of doctors and mental health professionals should decide those laws.”
Cecilia Moreno said, “No, because I believe government control over people’s bodies is fascist. The government shouldn’t be in control of bodily autonomy.”
63% of United States citizens believe abortion should be legal according to the Pew Research Center.
When it comes to gender differences of abortion, 61% of men and 64% of women believe that abortion should be legal.
Amendment 3 has passed since the Nov. 5th election showing that the people of Missouri want the right to abortion.
