Now in the homestretch of election season, political campaigns are firing on all cylinders in the lead up to Election Day. As a part of the “Keep Kansas Great” Tour, Republican candidates made a stop outside of The Sunflower coffee shop on October 7 to appeal to potential voters.
Dr. Roger Marshall, candidate for U.S. Senate, and Jake LaTurner, candidate for Kansas’ 2nd congressional district for the U.S. House of Representatives spoke to nearly 40 Atchison residents Wednesday morning about their stances on issues and plans for if they are elected.
LaTurner, the current Kansas State Treasurer, outlined his viewpoint for defending the police.
“I believe in funding the police. I think we need to defend the men and women who are putting their lives on the line every single day for us,” LaTurner said.
Marshall, the current representative for Kansas’ 1st congressional district, explained his pro-life stance as a former obstetrician.
“When you’ve delivered a baby a day for 30-some years, you understand the sanctity and value of life. I never dreamed that I would get to Congress and have to fight harder to defend babies there than I did in the delivery room”, Marshall said.
Other prominent figures in the Kansas Republican party were also present, including Kansas GOP Chairman Mike Kuckelman and former governor of Kansas Dr. Jeff Colyer.
In addition to the Atchison residents at the event, several Benedictine students were also in attendance. Julia Fassero, senior, explains why she came to hear the candidates speak.
“I’m a Kansas resident and a lot of these guys are from my district so I’ve done a lot of research on them and knew what they were talking about. It was really good to see them gather together and reiterate their strong pro-life positions Fassero said.
Marshall is running against Democrat and Kansas State Senator, Dr. Barbara Bollier. LaTurner is running against Democrat and Mayor of Topeka, Michelle De La Isla. Elections will take place on November 3.
