Wrestling places two at Kansas Cup

The Benedictine College wrestling team took to the mats on Sunday at Newman University to compete in the Kansas Cup. This event is comprised of various Junior College, NAIA, and NCAA DII wrestling programs throughout the state of Kansas.

Benedictine, who finished in 10th place, was able to place two top-finishers.

Junior Dillon Scanlan finished in second place in the 141 pound weight class. Scanlan earned a first round bye and then proceeded to take down Shaquille Wright from Labette CC in an 11-0 major decision. He then toppled Newman Universities’ Garrett Whiston with a 7-2 decision. Scanlan was defeated 13-1 in a major decision by Tyler Hinton of Ottawa University.

Junior Kaleb Mitchell placed fifth place in the 165 weight class. After losing 8-6 in the first round to Noel Torres of Newman University in sudden victory, he rattled off two straight victories over CJ Garcia of Bethany College and Cory Coombs of Northwest Technical College. Both wins came by fall. Mitchell fell to Torres again in the consolation quarterfinals 2-0. He rounded out his day with a 17-5 major decision over Sean Taborsky of Barton CC.

The Raven wrestling team will travel to Lamoni, Iowa on Saturday, Jan 30 for the Heart Duals hosted by Graceland University.
