The Monks at St. Benedict’s Abbey will be hosting the fourth annual Monk Run at 9 a.m., Sept. 23 presented by the Raven Runners Club in association with the abbey.
The Monk Run is an opportunity for monks and students to get together, said Clare Gorman, Raven Runners Club President.
“It’s a fundraiser for health care for the elderly monks,” Gorman said. “It’s a great way to give back to the Abbey because they do so much for us.”
Senior Claire Mealey is one of the founders of the Raven Runners Club and has served as president. She is actively involved in the club and is excited to help with this event in any way that she can.
“It’s a fun way to hang out with the monks and the families of Atchison. The course through Abbeyland is really fun and scenic,” Mealey said.
The course starts at the top of Abbey drive in front of the guesthouse, going through Abbey Land, across the northeast corner of campus and back to the start.
Snacks and games are planned afterward, then runners may spend time with each other and the monks.
The 5k run/1-mile walk starts with sign-in at 8 a.m. Entry fee is $25 which includes food and a t-shirt. Participants must register online at kansasmonks.org, and click on Monk Run.
