Letter to the Circuit Editor

Sister Jo Ann Fellin, OSB

To complete the story of the African Artifact exhibit in the McCarthy Gallery, I offer the following information.

Many of the pieces displayed are from a collection of artifacts that Sister Georgia McGarry assembled during a year of study in Sierra Leone where she did research for her doctoral dissertation. Sister Georgia was a professor of history at Benedictine College before serving as Academic Dean of the College, a position she resigned shortly before her death in 1994.

Sister Georgia had given many pieces of her collection to two BC art instructors when they opened the Carnegie Art Center in Leavenworth. There they set up a curriculum for elementary teachers based on these artifacts. When the Center closed, the artifacts were returned to Mount St. Scholastica Monastery where they have been stored for about three years. It is wonderful to have them now displayed in the McCarthy Gallery of Art.

Sister Jo Ann Fellin, OSB, is a professor emerita at Benedictine, She can be reached via phone at 913-360-6200.
